Questions and answers

The questions people ask a PC repair shop.

Straight answers, in the order people usually ask them. Anything else, ask Charlie or call 07474 951300.

How much does a PC or laptop repair cost?

We diagnose first and quote before any work starts, so you always know the price before you commit. There is no price list online because every fault and every machine is different. If there is a diagnostic charge we tell you before you hand the machine over; if we did not mention one, there is not one. Our repair work is guaranteed for 30 days and new parts carry the manufacturer's warranty.

Do you repair laptops as well as desktop PCs?

Yes. Windows desktops and laptops of any make or age, plus Apple Macs and MacBooks. We do not repair phones, tablets or games consoles. See what we fix.

Do you fix Apple Macs and MacBooks?

Yes. Older Intel Macs can often have memory and storage upgraded like any PC. Apple silicon Macs (M1 and later) cannot be upgraded at all, so the honest advice is a clean-up, a reinstall with a backup, or a different machine. MacBook screens and batteries are repairable; parts cost more than PC equivalents, so a quote comes first.

Where are you, and do I have to bring the machine to you?

We are in Denmead, Hampshire, and drop-off is by appointment - we send the address when you book. Local collection and return can usually be arranged around Waterlooville, Portsmouth and the surrounding area; the map on the contact page shows roughly ten miles of Denmead. From further away you can post a machine to us and we post it back, with the postage both ways added to the bill. Office and desk setups are in person only.

Which towns do you cover for PC and laptop repair?

We are based in Denmead and work across roughly ten miles of it: Waterlooville, Cowplain, Horndean, Clanfield, Hambledon, Purbrook, Cosham, Havant, Emsworth, Portsmouth, Southsea, Fareham, Gosport, Wickham, Bishop's Waltham and Petersfield, and the villages between them. Each town has its own section on the areas we cover page with what drop-off and collection look like from there. Somewhere else nearby? Ask - if it is a sensible drive we will usually say yes.

Will I lose my files during a repair?

We only look at what we need to in order to fix the fault, and we do not copy your files unless you ask us to back them up or move them. Drives can fail during a repair through nobody's fault, so back up anything precious before you hand a machine over if you can - and if you cannot, tell us and we will do it first. The privacy policy sets out the rules we work to.

My PC is slow - is it worth fixing or should I buy a new one?

Most machines under about eight years old are worth upgrading before replacing. An SSD and more memory make a five-year-old machine feel new for a fraction of the cost of a new one. We will tell you honestly which yours is. If you want a head start, run SpecCore and save the report; it tells us what is inside and what Windows has been logging.

Can you build me a custom gaming PC or workstation?

Yes. Every build is specced around what you will actually use it for and your budget, stress-tested and cable-managed before handover. Collect from Denmead, have it delivered and set up locally for a call-out charge, or have it shipped anywhere in the UK. Builds are quoted per machine rather than priced off a list, because parts prices move every week. The build planner gives you a starting point.

A pop-up says my PC is infected and to ring a number - what should I do?

Do not ring the number. It is a scam, not a real virus warning. Disconnect the machine from the internet. If you have already given someone remote access or shared bank or card details, contact your bank first, before anything else. Then book a clean-up so nothing is left behind.

Do you set up computers for small businesses?

Yes - workstations and laptops, monitors, docks and printers, Wi-Fi and network tidy-ups, backups and updates, and moving to new machines, for small businesses around Denmead, Waterlooville and Portsmouth. It starts with a short visit and a written plan and quote. See for business.

What is Charlie?

Charlie is our automated troubleshooting assistant on this website - the "Ask Charlie" button, or the help page. Describe what your PC, laptop or Mac is doing and it walks you through the safe checks, one question at a time, and tells you plainly when it is time to bring the machine in. It is guidance, not a diagnosis, and a real person picks up when you book, call or email.

Are the free tools really free?

Yes. Lockbox and SpecCore are free Windows apps with no account, no tracking and nothing to pay. Lockbox encrypts folders and PDFs entirely offline; SpecCore lists everything inside your PC and explains the Windows error logs in plain English.
