Symptom checker

What is it doing?

Pick the closest match. You will see what it usually turns out to be, what we check first, and what to bring. It is a guide, not a diagnosis - that part happens on the bench.

Painfully slow

Usually
An old mechanical hard drive, too little memory, a drive that is nearly full, or far too much starting up with Windows.
What we check first
Drive health and type, memory, what loads at startup and whether anything unwanted is running.
What to bring
Just the machine.

Not on the list? Ask Charlie.

Charlie is our troubleshooting assistant. Describe what the machine is doing in your own words, or paste a SpecCore report, and Charlie walks you through the safe checks - and says plainly when it is time to bring it in.

Repairs

What we fix

Windows desktops and laptops of any make or age, plus Macs and MacBooks - shop-bought, custom-built or one somebody else built badly.
  • Machines that will not start, boot or display
  • Windows and macOS problems, updates gone wrong, reinstalls
  • Virus, malware and scam pop-up clean-ups
  • Overheating, noise, dust and thermal paste
  • Failed drives, with your data copied off first
  • Laptop batteries, screens, hinges and charging ports
  • New PC setup and moving everything from the old one
Upgrades

Make the one you have faster

Most machines under about eight years old are worth upgrading before they are worth replacing. We will tell you which yours is.
  • SSD swap, with Windows and your files moved across as they were
  • More memory - quick, cheap and noticeable
  • Graphics card, after checking the power supply and case can take it
  • Quieter cooling and better airflow
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for machines that never had it
  • A fresh Windows install for a tired machine
  • Macs: SSD and memory upgrades on the models that allow it, and clean macOS installs
How it works

Four steps. No surprises.

STEP 1

Tell us what is happening

Call, message, or send the symptom above. A rough idea of the make, model and age helps.

STEP 2

Drop it in Denmead

By appointment, so you are not left waiting. Local collection and return can usually be arranged, or post it to us with the postage both ways on the bill.

STEP 3

Diagnosed and quoted

We find the actual cause, then give you a price. Nothing is done without your say-so.

STEP 4

Fixed, tested, explained

Back to you working properly, with a plain-English note of what we did.

Your data stays yours

We only look at what we need to in order to fix the fault. We do not copy your files unless you ask us to back them up or move them, and any copy we make for that is deleted once you have confirmed everything is back where it should be. Drives can fail during a repair through nobody's fault, so if you can back up before you hand a machine over, please do - and if you cannot, tell us and we will do it first.

Straight about money

Every job gets a quote before work starts, and we will tell you about any diagnostic charge before you hand the machine over. If a repair is not worth doing, we say so - and help you decide what to do instead. Our repair work is guaranteed for 30 days: if a fault we fixed comes back, we look at it again free of charge.
